October 6, 2026 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

In this 3-part introductory hands-on class, you will learn the “ins and outs” of the Japanese running stitch technique called Sashiko. Fabric, thread and tools are supplied, along with many handouts that will help you continue your journey long after class is over.

Space is limited and registration is required. Must attend all 3 sessions. Stop by the front desk or give us a call at 207-767-7660 to reserve your spot!

Class 1: Tuesday, October 7th, 12pm-2pm
We’ll discuss the history of this beautiful and utilitarian stitching and look at many different examples. We will talk about the types of fabrics, threads & needles used; learn basic traditional patterns and how to transfer them, and use some of the tools that help make this a mindful and enjoyable pastime. We’ll create a small free-form prayer cloth to get used to the technique.
Class 2: Tuesday, October 14th, 12pm-2pm
We’ll create a small sampler of traditional stitches and patterns. These can later be used to made a potholder, a small quilt, etc.

Class 3: Tuesday, October 28th, 12pm-2pm
In this final class, we will use stencils to draw an over all pattern on a larger square of indigo cloth, and spend the class perfecting the running stitch technique on our pattern of choice.
