Friends of SPPL

The Friends of the South Portland Public Library provides support for the library’s mission and services.

Through memberships and fundraising activities, the Friends helps to fund programs and other service enhancements not provided for in the annual municipal budget.

Membership in the Friends runs for the calendar year and all memberships expire at the end of December of the year joined.

You can join the Friends of the South Portland Public Library online, using a credit card, HERE.

If you do not wish to register online, you can download a membership form HERE.  Simply fill out the form and deliver it (in person or by mail), along with payment, to the library.

The Friends BookShop

The Friends BookShop is an ongoing book sale, located on the lower level of the Main Library.  The BookShop strives to be open on a regular schedule, staffed with volunteers eager to put some great books in your hands at a great price, with all proceeds going to support the library!

Our Current schedule is: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays
from 10am until 3pm

If you are interested in volunteering to help in the BookShop, please let us know here, or contact the Friends through their Facebook page.

While we appreciate your donation of used books, since the BookShop is an entirely volunteer operation we must insist that the following guidelines be followed:

  • We can accept gently used books, CDs and DVDs only during normal BookShop hours.
  • We can only accept ONE box of donations per donor per day.
  • The acceptance of any donated materials is at the discretion of the Friends volunteer on duty and items may be refused for any reason.
  • Items showing signs of water, mold or other damage should not be brought into the library.
  • Please do not leave donations in the library’s book drop or unattended in any area of the library.
  • What we can use the most are newer and popular (or, recently popular) books.
  • Please, no textbooks, scholarly books, antique books, encyclopedias or magazines of any kind.
  • If you have any questions about your donation, please come in and ask a volunteer BEFORE you bring items into the building.
  • Library staff can not accept donated materials on behalf of the Friends.

Please understand that, while we appreciate that you think of us, the need to dispose of materials we can not use consumes our very limited volunteer and City staff resources.
