You Can Help Keep Our Community Healthy!

The South Portland Public Library is collecting homemade fabric face masks for InterMed and for city workers!

As the City of South Portland prepares to transition back to working with the public, we want to make sure that we are taking precautions to keep everyone – the public and our staff – safe.

As part of this mission, we are collecting face masks for use by city employees.  All other masks will be donated to InterMed for distribution to their patients.

If you have extra cotton fabric and some basic sewing sewing skills, you can help us make face masks.  Masks of all sizes are needed, including child sizes.  Any pattern is acceptable (see below for some suggestions), but, if possible, masks with elastic ear bands are preferable to masks with fabric ties.

How to help:

  1. Wash and dry your fabric on high heat!  This will pre-shrink the fabric so it can easily be re-washed.
  2. Sew as many masks as you want.
  3. Place completed masks in a ziploc bag and label it with the size of the masks (child, adult).
  4. Drop the CLOSED ziploc bag in library book drop.  Optional: If you wish to include your name and mailing address, InterMed will send you a thank you note.
Here are a few different patterns you could choose from:
