In August, the library will be offering and highlighting a variety of programming around STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics! We hope this month-long theme will provide engaging activities for all ages throughout the end of summer. From 3-D pens and monarch caterpillar rearing to building programs and a book launch party for a book on Google, we’re positive we’ll have something for every budding creative person in South Portland!
STEAM programming in August:
Monarch Butterfly Rearing: Observe the phenomenal transformation of monarchs from tiny caterpillars to chrysalises, then finally to butterflies! Monarchs will be on display in the Children’s Room for the public to view. Ongoing throughout August.
Guided Tree Tour: Join South Portland’s City Horticulturalist, Mary Lou Fathke, for a guided tree tour of the library and Brown School grounds! Tuesday, August 7, at 6:30 p.m.
Construct & Create with Jarrett Lerner: Create and build with Brain Flakes, LEGOs, Magnatiles, K’nex and more at this month’s Construct & Create! As an added bonus, Jarrett Lerner will be joining us as a special guest to draw and make robot crafts. Jarrett is the author of Enginerds, and a fellow lover of STEAM programming. Wednesday, August 8 from 1-3 p.m.
Baby Builders: Baby Builders is a weekly building and playing program for ages 0-4 years. Play with Duplo blocks, socialize, and make new friends! Every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Ages 0-4.
iMake: SPPL’s do-it-yourself series for ages 10-18. iMake offers materials and instructions for a new project every week! Examples of past projects include duct tape roses, weaving on handmade looms, folded books, printmaking and more! Every Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Ages 10-18.
Google It Book Launch Party & STEAMfest: Join local author, Anna Crowley Redding for the launch of her debut middle grade nonfiction book, Google It: A History of Google. Anna will read an excerpt from her book, and help lead kids through a fun festival of STEAM related activities! Create your own Google Doodle, build the strongest tinfoil boat, construct the Google logo and more at this fun all-ages event! After you try your hand at the STEAMfest activities, enjoy ice cream with Google colored toppings! Bull Moose will be selling copies of Anna’s book at the event, and Anna will be available to sign books, bookmarks and more. Tuesday, August 21 at 6:00 p.m.
Kid’s Crafternoon: Children ages 5-10 are invited to participate in a special crafting program! Make a variety of crafts and have fun. For more information, call Youth Services at 767-7660 x 3. Wednesday, August 22 from 1-2:30.
