With a theme like “Libraries Rock,” we guarantee this year’s Summer Reading Program is going to be note worthy! Ages birth through adult are invited to sign up for our children, teen, or adult programs starting Saturday, June 16!
The program runs for 8 weeks (June 16-August 11), with opportunities to enter raffles and win prizes along the way. Children who complete 18 hours of reading and 8 activities from a given list will win a custom designed t-shirt and a free book, and teens who complete 18 hours of reading and 8 activities will win a Bull Moose gift card and a book! Adults can enter a weekly raffle for each week they finish a book, and will also be eligible for a grand prize drawing at the end of the summer.
To kick off the program, we invite all ages to rock out with an exciting West African drumming performance by Annegret Baier at 10:30 a.m. at the Main Library on June 16. Annegret will demonstrate a variety of rhythm instruments rooted in West African music at her special performance, including Djembe, Conga, Kpanlogo, Kalimba, and Balaphone. After Annegret’s performance, we will also host a fun board game event with Diversions Puzzles and Games from 1-3 p.m. Diversions staff will be available to teach a variety of games they bring from the shop, so you can try out new games every month!
Other events this summer include an instrument “petting zoo” with Portland Symphony Orchestra, rock climbing on a mobile rock wall with Evo Rock & Fitness, a music video workshop for teens with Unwritten Roads, a juggling performance by Michael Menes, an outdoor rock concert, plus a variety of craft programs, author visits, dress-up theme days, and more! If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also get your Libraries Rock Passport and have it stamped at certain area libraries, and can also learn about the geology of Maine and the rocks at Willard Beach. We have a packed summer schedule, so make sure to stay informed with our website, or follow the library on Facebook for regular updates.
Children, teens and adults are invited to participate in some or all of these programs. Remember to sign up for Summer Reading while you’re at the library, too! If you can’t make it on our kick-off day, stop by either library location after June 16 to register.
The Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Friends of the South Portland Public Library. For more information, call 767-7660.
