Join author Karen Wentworth at the Main Library for a photographic tour of Maine’s coastal cemeteries on Thursday, August 15 at 6:30 p.m. Karen will offer a fascinating sixty-minute presentation based on her book, Maine’s Coastal Cemeteries. The presentation will include photographs of Maine’s most beautiful, unique, and historic cemeteries with a focus on Southern Maine. Photographs of gravestones dating from the early 18th century through the 19thcentury will demonstrate our evolving attitude toward the inevitability of death, hope, and faith through headstone carvings, epitaphs, and symbols. The discussion will include the meaning of symbols, terminology, historic stories, and folklore.
Maine’s Coastal Cemeteries grew out of Karen’s interest in photography, history and research. She also authored Exploring the Spirit of Maine, A Seekers Guide. Her work experience includes owner of a specialty food store, public school teacher, and ombudsperson at a youth shelter. In November, Karen retired from Through These Doors, where she was the Director of Community Education and Prevention. She has a Master of Education and a Doctor of Ministry.
