Join us at the Main Library on Saturday, April 20th at 2pm for a special Poetry Edition of our Author Talk series! In celebration of National Poetry Month, local poet Jeri Theriault will be introducing spoken word poets James Kim and Lauren Saxon. Each poet will read selections of their work and copies of their books will be available for sale and signing following the reading.
About the poets:
Jeri Theriault graduated from Colby College, later earning an M.Ed. in Instructional Leadership (USM) and an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her teaching career spanned thirty-four years, eight of them at South Portland High School, and six of them as English Department Chair at the International School of Prague. Her poetry collections include Radost, my red, the award-winning, In the Museum of Surrender, and Self-Portrait as Homestead. She is the editor of WAIT: Poems from the Pandemic. Her poems and reviews have appeared widely. Recent awards include the 2023 Maine Arts Commission Literary Arts Fellowship and the 2023 Monson Arts Fellowship.
James Kim moved from South Korea at the age of nine to attend a school in Newton, MA. He currently resides in Portland, ME and is working as a 6th grade humanities teacher at The South Portland Middle School. James studied Creative Writing and Philosophy at Colby College and recently completed his M.S.Ed at The University of Pennsylvania. James is a spoken word poet who writes and performs about themes ranging from identity, Asian-American duality, intersectionality, and healing.
Lauren Saxon is a queer, Black poet and engineer living in Portland, ME. She loves her cats, her Subaru, and spending way too much time on twitter (@Lsax_235). Lauren’s work is featured in Barrelhouse, Empty Mirror, Across the Margin, Homology Lit, and more. Her debut chapbook, “You’re My Favorite” won the 2023 Maine Literary Award for Book of Poetry, and is out now with Thirty West Publishing.
