April 8, 2024 – 2:00

South Portland Historical Society Museum and Development Director Seth Goldstein visits the Main Library on Monday, April 8th at 2pm for a presentation on Immigration in South Portland, Past and Present.

Today we live on the un-ceded land of the Wabanaki.  Since these first migrants arrived between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago, many waves of immigrants have made South Portland their home. Seth will use the mass gravesite, located in Calvary Cemetery, of the Irish immigrants who perished in the shipwreck of the Bohemian as the jumping off point for a discussion on Irish immigration. He will delve into the experiences of other groups of immigrants including enslaved Africans, Italians, and Jews. Seth will conclude his presentation with a discussion of recent African immigrants to our city including former mayor Deqa Dhalac, the U.S.’s first Somali-American mayor.

This program is part of our weekly drop-in Monday Matinees & More series.
