It’s that time of year again–time to get ready for the Summer Reading Program! This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.” The 8-week program starts Saturday, June 17, when South Portland residents and South Portland Public Library card holders of all ages can sign up to participate in summer reading. There will be separate children, teen, and adult reading programs, each with their own challenges and prizes.
Reading is Fun for All Ages!
Children’s Summer Reading Program:
Children ages birth through 5th grade will read or be read to for 18 hours, and complete 8 activities over the course of the 8 week program. Finishers will win a brand new book and a custom designed t-shirt. There will also be raffles that children can enter weekly to win books, as well as grand prizes at the end of the summer. Youth Services has a busy schedule of summer programs, including Mr. and Mrs. Fish, Mad Science, and Lindsay and her Puppet Pals!
Teen Summer Reading Program:
Teens in grades 6-12 are challenged to read 18 hours and complete 8 activities within the 8 week program. Every finisher will win a brand new book and a Bull Moose gift card. Teens can also win other prizes by visiting the library every week to enter special raffles. Additionally, Teen Services will offer a variety of special programs, including a weekly maker program, a henna tattoo workshop, and an oobleck party!
Adult Summer Reading Program
The library’s ever popular Adult Summer Reading Program returns. Read your way through summer by reading and entering weekly raffle drawings for a $10 gift certificate to Bull Moose. Three grand prizes, a $50, $75, and $100 gift certificate will be drawn at the end of the program. Stop by the front desk at the Main or Branch Libraries to pick up your reading card.
The Summer Reading Program begins on Saturday, June 17 and ends Saturday, August 12. Participants can sign up at the Main Library starting Saturday, June 17, or at the Branch Library starting Sunday, June 18. For more information about the program, call 767-7660 or stop by the library. We will have programming for all ages all summer long, but we are kicking off summer reading with three special programs on June 17:
- Father’s Day Story Time and Craft: All ages are invited to listen to stories celebrating dads and make a fun craft, starting at 10:30 a.m.
- Kindness Rocks: Join the Kindness Rocks Project and help spread kindness in the world by decorating a special rock. Adults, teens and children are all welcome to attend and help “build a better world,” one random act of kindness at a time! This program starts at 11:30 a.m.
- Board Games with Diversions: Board games are a great way to use your brain in a fun and engaging way! Come play an old favorite or learn something new from our constantly rotating collection of games supplied by Diversions! Game day runs from 1-3 p.m.
